This week in Advanced Game Art and Design, we spent a lot of time working on designing original characters for a comic strip of our own design. I saw a lot of people jump right in and start designing original characters. Most of them were very creative, and had personified an everyday object, such as an alarm clock, a stop sign, ect. I believe that having human characters has certain elements that no other character can have, such as being relate-able. Drawing a cartoon character was very difficult for some of the more skilled artists in the class, as it requires that you infer a large amount of emotion in a small amount of detail. I have found this task difficult, as it also requires a certain amount of consistency, which I can not achieve in my pencil and paper drawings. As a result, most of my characters have different proportions in each picture, or have been drawn with a ruler to make very geometric shapes (or in some cases, both).
In the end, cartoon characters require a few things:

On Monday I was finishing up my game art and placing it all in one layout, and soon after that I was working on making posters for "Magic The Gathering" my favorite Tcg. Using adobe Photoshop I placed all of the images in a collection of posters to display the release, "New Phyrexia". I have not really learned any new techniques, but I have reinforced old ones.
This past week in sci vis, we have been learning about bitmaps and working with them in adobe photo shop. Personally I like using photo shop for what it was meant to be used for and not stuff best done in illustrator. The fact that you can simply change the color of a car using photo shop is totally awesome. However, I don't like the selection and mask tools, I find them confusing. The picture below is an ad made in photo shop by yours truly.
This past week in school we have been learning about vector graphics, using Adobe Illustrator. Personally I prefer this program to both Photoshop and ms paint. I enjoyed the simple (compared to Photoshop) user interface. However, I did get lost due to the fact that there are oh so many tools. I can see this program being used in a game company for making maps or floor plans, and for concept art. The image below was made by yours truly using Adobe Illustrator.
